You must post 2 times before next Tuesday, April 24th. Your first post should be submitted by Thursday, April 20th. It is to be in response to one of the prompts below. The second time you post, it must be in response to or in reaction to the post of another student.
1. At the beginning of the novel, the author alludes to the Garden of Eden when stating "The world was so recent many things lacked names, and in order to indicate them it was necessary to point," (1). In what ways has Macondo, encountered a fall?
- What has corrupted Macondo and its people, especially the Buendia family?
- How has Macondo changed from a place of social harmony to one of discord in its struggle for autonomy?
- What outside forces have aided in this change?
2. Identify elements of the story that you find particularly confusing, interesting, or worthy of discussion. Pose your own questions. Include portions of the text that you feel contribute to your questions/your point. Cite page numbers.
Some elements of one hundred years of solitude that I think are worthy of discussion include: How can death bring the Buendia's together if it will? Also how much of this book is from Marquez's experiences.
ReplyDeleteI agree on its interesting how similar his experiences are to the book, i know in class we talked about alot of the similarities between his life and the book and i just think he must of had one crazy life
DeleteI was completely shocked by the affair and marriage between Rebeca and Jose Arcadio. I know that he had been gone a long time and he had changed, but they are brother and sister and that's just weird. I was also a little surprised that Ursula was so unhappy about it, I understand where she is coming from, but she has been supportive of other issues, such as the children Pilar had and allowing them into the house. But I guess this is a little more extreme. It was also surprising because she was so in love with Pietro and had such a long engagement with him and she just dropped all of that to marry her brother. This is shown on page 91 and continued through the chapter
ReplyDeleteI agree with maria, i thought it was odd that he would call rebeca "little sister" then go on to marry her. I also agree with it being odd that ursula was so surprised considering she married her cousin, and rebeca and jose arcadio technically aren't related. I understand that she wouldn't want that for her children, but i don't see why she would kick them out of the family.
DeleteOne thing that has corrupted Macondo and the Buendia family mentally is the insomnia and amnesia, which caused them to have to label things so they wouldn't forget what it was for or called. It has also been attempted to be changed by outside forces such as when the magistrate Moscote tried to make all the villagers paint their houses a certain color
ReplyDeleteGreat post Tinks! I completely agree with you. I also like the pic ;). Macando is having some very unusual things happen to them. They are struggling to find common ground and some people are losing it. Moscote has some very different views from Aureliano and it is nice to see Aureliano finally stand up for his views
DeleteI thought one thing that was confusing was the priest. I don't understand why he was in the book at all, or the importance of his chocolate drink allowing him to float. He seems to just be a filler in the book
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nathan. I don't think the priest has a significant role in the book and it doesnt really add anything to the story. He just pops up at random times and I don't see a point to it. I think he just seems like a filler in the book too.
DeleteYeah, Marquez must have ran out of ideas during this part and put this in there to see if anyone would question it.
DeleteIm confused as to how Remedios died. Did she die because her body couldn't handle being pregnant at such a young age? The book never says how she died straight forward so its confusing. Also the war part is confusing to me too. Aureliano told people to call him Colonel Aureliano Buendia, but whos side is he on in the war? At times thoughout the chapter it seemed like he could have been on either side so i don't get it.
ReplyDeletei agree with summer i was really confused on who's side Aureliano Buendia's side he was on he seemed to be going both ways. Remedios death was also confusing to me and dont understand what exactly caused her death.
Deletediddo i didnt really get that part:p but after continuing to read more i got a better grasp of the text. #thankgod
Deletei agree with summer on this. i thought it was confusing how Remedios died. the book never really specified it so i didn't know if it was the pregnancy that killed her or someone else posioned her.
DeleteI was confused about why the priest was in the story can anyone explain that to me?
ReplyDeleteAt first he was brought in to marry Remidos and Aureliano, but he thought that it was crazy that they didn't have a set religion or place of worship. So he took it upon himself to get money to build a church and to guide the people through his religion.
DeleteMacando is becoming very modernized and complicated. It used to be such a simple village but with all of the new people comes new ideas. Macando has become much larger and people are showing different views. Aureliano is finally standing up for his views and this will definetly start a major clash between the conservatives and liberals. OMG im so excited.
ReplyDeleteIt has been most thrilling to read (and visualize it in my brain)the process of Macando becoming more and more modernize along with some more complications. It went from being a simple village but once the new people come there are sooo many new ideas and progress! ahh can this book possibly get any better?!
ReplyDeleteI found it interesting how Pilar refused to sleep with Arcadio after she had been so willing to sleep with other members of his family, including his father, which kinda shows how their society has changed and is still growing. It makes me wonder if she was somehow able to tell that he was her son, even though she had nothing to do with him most of his life. I also find it ironic how he ends up falling for the girl that Pilar paid to sleep with him in her place and that paid someone else to do her own job.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Logan that it was weird how Pilar wouldn't sleep with Arcadio but would pretty much sleep with anyone. In a sense she was the "whore" of the town. Arcadio told her to not act like a saint when she refused. This exchange between the two of them shows how mixed up the family is and how messed up the town is as a whole.
DeleteI agree with Amaranta and how she refused to marry Pietro Crespi. It wasn't fair to Amaranta that now that Remedios is out of the way Crespi now wants Amaranta. I feel as though she probably thought she was second place. It was terrible how Crespi killed himself because of her not accepting and ignoring him. Amaranta maybe could have at least showed Crespi some respect but in the end she was hurt.
ReplyDeletei thought it was interesting and weird how Arcadio tried to sleep with Pilar, since its his mother. I'm surprised that Pilar didn't sleep with him since incest is so common in the book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Camilla in that Amaranta is the second choice and no girl wants to be that. She could have been nicer to Crespi and maybe he wouldn't of killed himself but I don't blame her for not wanting to marry him because I wouldn't want to either.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that has corrupted Macondo is the arrival of Rebeca. She has caused many problems since she entered the story and I can't help wonder what the town would be like if she had never showed up. She brought insomnia and memory loss to everyone in the town and then she and Jose Arcadio fell in love which really upset Ursula and she kicked them out. I feel like the Buendia family would be a lot better off without Rebeca.
ReplyDeleteI think that the gypsies corrupted the family the most. It caused Jose arcadio buendia to stop working hard and begin working on silly things that didn't matter to the family. Also, Jose arcadio ran away with a gypsy girl that he had strong feelings for. Aureliano picked up on Jose arcadio buendias habits of alchemy for the majority of his life. these things wouldn't have happened if the gypsies stayed away from macondo
