Character and Plot Development

You must post 2 times before Tuesday, April 17th. Your first post should be completed by Thursday, April 12th. It should be in response to one of the prompts below. The second time you post, it must be in response to, or in reaction to, the post of another student.

  • On page 68, Jose Arcadio Buendia says that "Love is a disease." What evidence is there of the destructive powers of love and lust in this novel in terms of how an individual can be affected and the impact it can have on relationships?

  • Choose a particular character to evaluate. Determine whether the character traits you have noted are ultimately positive or negative, or both. Explain your reasoning. For example Jose Arcadio Buendia: He is inventive and spends many hours alone on his alchemy experiments trying to discover already known science. This is ultimately negative, because he isolates himself from his family and eventually goes mad.

  • Identify elements of the story that you find particularly interesting, or worthy of discussion. Pose your own questions.Include portions of the text that you feel contribute to your questions/your point. Cite page numbers.

  1. I think the biggest example of the destructive powers of love and lust in this chapter was that of Rebeca and her sister. They both loved the Italian man and when Rebeca was allowed to marry him, her sister promises vengeance and vows to stop the wedding even if she must kill Rebeca, this love tore apart their relationship as sisters.

    1. Yeah i dont know how you could say any other example is a bigger example than this. This shows jealousy above everything else and that is wrong

    2. i agree with nathan on this. Love pretty much turned rebecca against her sister and made her pretty much go crazy.

    3. I agree love and jealously turned rebecca away from he sister and made her insane. The love tore the relationship of the sisters which is sad to me.

  2. One of the biggest examples of destructive powers of love in lust in the book to me is that of Rebeca and her sister. they both claim to love the Italian man and when only Rebeca is allowed to marry him it imediatly causes vengence and jelously between the two sisters. It essentually turns Rebecas sister crazy and determined to do sick things which tore apart her and her sisters relationship

    1. I completely agree with "Unknown". Amaranta has gone loco. She has the love disease and it is called jealousy. She wants the Italian so much and will do anything to get him. Even when she is going away to meet more people she tells Rebeca that she will not let this marriage happen. The Buendias are losing it that is fo sho.

  3. I agree obviosly with nathans post for it states similar ideas as mine. We both are in agreement in how twisted the sisters relationship becomes over the italian man to the point where its able to tear apart there relationship, such a shame.

    1. Sam..Very similar thought process we have going right now. I think it is fair to say that we can feed off each others greatideas at this point. The relationship of the sisters is very strange that they are fighting over the same man and willing to kill one another just to marry him.

    2. i strongly agree Sam. it seems stupid to that two sister fight to the point over one man so much to the point where they wanna kill each other.... family first >>> #realtalk

    3. I also agree in the fact that both Rebeca and her sister pretty much ruin their relationship with each other over the italian man. It even gets to the point where Rebeca is going to marry the italian man, and her sister will do everything in her power to not make it happen, even if that means killing Rebeca.

  4. I believe that Ursula Iguaran's traits are a definitely positive. She lives so long that she loses track of her age. Practical, energetic, and fiercely devoted to the well-being of her family, she has superhuman will and character. Although she lacks the excesses of her husband, she has the business skills to begin a business in candy animals and pastries that keeps the family afloat during hard times. She is also the one who discovers a path from Macondo to the outside world after her husband fails.

  5. Some parts of this book that i find interesting is how Marquez uses magic realism, and how odd this book really is. I dont need to explain why this book is odd. But some parts i find odd is how plain everything is. Insightful comments right there

    1. I agree, i thought this previous chapter contained many examples of magic realism and had a lot of weird situations occurring

  6. Jose Arcadio Buendia said that "Love is a disease." on page 68. I think he is saying that love isn't always easy and there is hurt sometimes. There are a few incidences in the book where this statement can seem to be true. The first place were this is seen is when Jose Arcadio Buendia left Pilar to be with the gypsy girl. Jose in his heart probably knew that it was wrong to just leave Pilar like that especially she was going to have his child. Another spot in the book when Ursula went to find her son. Both of these show love toward another person.

  7. To me, evidence of love's destructive powers is found in Jose Arcadio and Pilar's relationship. Lust caused Jose Arcadio to secretly sleep with Pilar and eventually get her pregnant. Then, when he went to visit the gypsies lust overcame him and he slept with a gypsy as well and ended up leaving his family. His lust changed his life entirely, especially since he had to leave his family due to the decisions he made with Pilar and his lust towards the gypsy.

  8. I think there is evidence of love's destructive powers on page 65 when Rachel waits for the mule bringing the mail from Pietro. She waited every single day for it even though she knew it only came two weeks. And then when it didn't come on the usual day she freaked out. She started eating dirt, weeping, and eating earthworms. All repulsive things all driven by love. Love can make you do crazy things, but this is taking it to the extreme.

    2. I agree with Maria on this. You hear about people doing the strangest things when they are in love. I heard about a woman once who's husband cheated on her and she was so upset that she chopped of his penis in the middle of the night and threw it out the car window when she was driving and then later someone found it on the side of the road. She did this because she was so in love with her husband and was hurt by his actions. Love is such a powerful emotion that it makes you do crazy things. Examples from the book are Amaranta wanting to kill Rebeca because they both love Pietro and Rebeca eating dirt and whitewash when she was waiting on Pietro.

    3. I also agree with maria, i think that people tend to do odd things when they are in love. When people get angry with the person they love they do irrational things that they wouldn't do if it was with someone else. Also a lot of times, people will stop hanging out with their friends and begin to only hang out with their significant other because they aren't aware of how crazy they're being.

  9. There is a lot of lust in this book. People will just lay their eyes on another and are deeply in love. Jose Arcadio Buendia, for example, looked at that little nine year old girl and couldn't get her out of his mind. Even when Jose Arcadio met that gypsy, she felt him up and that was all it took. This place is obsessed with lust and having intercourse. One girl even has it every night with 70 different men. Relationships are hurt by it especially Jose Arcadio since he left his family with another woman.

    2. I agree with Bob and his different examples of lust in this book. Another example would be on page 67, "I've come to sleep with you." Pilar, who lived alone with two kids was waiting up for Aureliano and put the mosquito net over them so that the kids would not see them. There is a lot of lust in this book.

  10. I believe that the biggest destructive powers of love and lust in this chapter was the act of Rebeca and her sister. They both loved the Italian man. Rebecca was going to marry him and her sister was willing to kill her to stop the marriage.

  11. I didn't understand why Rebeca would eat the earth and paint off the walls. I couldn't grasp the reasoning of why she would do this. "She would put handfuls of earth in her pocket", says on page 63. Would this be an example of magic realism? Or is Rebeca just very odd action she does?

  12. i think rebecca has weird character traits. She hides things from her family like eating the paint of the walls and eating dirt. she also gets very jealous if something doesn't go her way like her sister's marriage. just because he doesn't want to marry her she's willing to kill her sister. i think that it is very negative because she shouldn't hide those things from your family and you shouldn't want to kill a family member over something as simple as marriage

  13. I dont understand why the two sisters had to marry the same italian guy. Rebecca had the right to marry him the sister should of just let them be instead of saying she was going to kill him.

  14. I think Amaranta has ultimately negative traits. She is very jealous and full of hatred towards Rebeca because she thinks she stole Pietro Crespi from her. She threathens to ruin Rebeca and Pietro's wedding and she ends up ruining her relationship with her sister when it used to be very good. When Rebeca dies and Pietro wants Amaranta, she refuses to marry him and ignores him and he ends up killing himself. Nothing is enough for her; she was willing to kill Rebeca when she was with Pietro and then when he finally wants her she doesn't want to be the second choice.
