This novel presents several striking leitmotifs (frequently repeated phrase, image, symbol, or situation in a literary work which supports the theme). Leitmotifs in One Hundred Years of Solitude include cyclical patterns, prophecy, illegitimacy, fantasy, and of course solitude. Consider one or more of the following:
1. What patterns of behavior are emerging among the characters and how are these recurring patterns affecting life in Macondo?
2.) What events in Macondo, if any, have been prophesied with precision or at least seem likely to come true?
3.) List the many ways fantasy plays a part in the characters' lives. Are these elements of fantasy every ironic?

One thing I found very interesting was how they actually accepted Colonel Aureliano's final request of being executed in Macando, especially sense he was the leader of the resistance and Macondo would be full of more rebels who would do anything to try and prevent the Colonel's death. Them do the execution in Macando is just more work for the soldiers because they have to fear for they're lives if they kill Aureliano. Also I want to know where Colonel Aureliano got the huge sores in his arm pits, that is just an awkward and uncomfortable place to have them.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It didnt seem likely they would actually listen to his requests. They had nothing to gain, so it made no sense whatsoever
DeleteI agree with logan on this, you would think that aureliano leading the rebels and being from macondo would be plenty of reason for them to not allow him being executed there. they could have easily killed him in a day wherever they captured him, instead they took all the time traveling back to macondo then keeping him in a jail cell all week. it was just unnecessary
DeleteI think that one of the recurring patterns in the book is people sleeping around before getting married. all of the sons slept with one or more women before settling down, and aureliano never really settled down. i think this changed macondo because almost all of the relations ended with a child, so there were more children but nobody really knew what family they should be a part of or how to handle them not knowing who their parents are in some cases.
ReplyDeleteI agree with rachel, i think this reflects the way our society is today. Many people have sex before marriage and with multiple partners before they actually settle down and get married.
DeleteAs i was reading the text tonight it hit me that a reoccuring theme in this book is the tendency of people to sleep around. Most everyone sleeps around at least once before they wed and many of these sexual altercations result in the miracle of birth. Fantastic? No, it leads to some children not really knowing which family they belong to which is truely a tragedy. Overall the acts of the people of Macondo engaging in premarital sex left me somewhat disgusted. They're tasteless acts in an otherwise fantastic book.
ReplyDeleteI about threw up i was so disgusted when i read about those acts in the book.
DeleteI thought the relationship between Amaranta and Gerineldo was interesting. First he says he loves her, but she still loves Pietro and doesnt care. but you would think she would try to pursue it since shes lonely. but then she still sends him handkerchiefs and goes with his family to visit. and again she laughs at him when he says he wants to marry her, but then she weeps when she hears of the threat that he was to be shot. she just doesnt know what she wants and i doubt she will ever be married or in a happy relationship. this is shown on pages 136 and 137
ReplyDeleteMaria points out an interesting topic and I thought the same thing while reading. I think that Amaranta is a confused girl and will never make a decision on what she really wants. I also feel like she gives Gerineldo mixed emotions but he doesn't care because he still loves her.
DeleteHow did Jose Arcadio die? Was he shot or did he shoot himself? Also i thought the whole death of Jose Arcadio was unclear and it doesn't make sense. I don't get how he didn't have a wound on his body or there was no weapon to be found. I also thought it was weird how the blood traced its way back Ursula and she followed it back to his dead body. This is found on pages 131 and 132. I don't like how this book is never to the point, it always seems unclear and you never know exactly what happened to some of the characters.
ReplyDeleteSome say Rebeca could have done it but what most likely happened was he killed himself. The things that occurred after are great examples of magic realism. It brings the fantastic to reality and also the blood disgusted me.
DeleteRemedios's death was predicted and it came true. Much of this book is fantasy but Marquez, using magic realism, makes it seem like everyday happenings. The entire book is one big fantasy.
ReplyDeleteI agree the magic realism aspect is very prevalent. constantly something new and crazy happens.
DeleteEvents prophesized have been the return of Aureliano by Ursula. She also sensed he was still alive. Aureliano also knew that Jose Arcadio Buendia was going to die through the message he sent to Ursula. There are many people seeing into the future or having premonitions in this book and a lot of them come to fruition.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why Colonel Aurielano wasn't more cautious after Pilar Ternera warns him to "Watch his mouth". He should have payed more attention to what he was putting in his mouth instead of drinking a cup of coffee that he didn't know where it came from. After this event happens however he knows the meaning of Pilar's warning.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Camilla. Im surprised that he didn't realize that the coffee had stuff in it, especially since Pilar's warning was straight forward. But at least he got better and didn't die.
DeleteThis part of the book really surprised me and I also don't understand why he would be so careless and drink out of a random coffee cup. Aurielano is also psychic so you would think he would've seen that coming. All in all, it was not a smart move on Aurielano's part.
DeleteI agree with Cam n summer. i too was surprised that he didn't realize that the coffee had stuff in it, especially since Pilar's warning was straight forward. But at least he got better and didn't die.
Deleteone of the recurring elements is events that have been prophesied. some of the events that came true were the death of Jose arcadio buendia and the warning to aureliano.

Also Aureliano knew that Jose Arcadio Buendia was going to die through that message he sent to Ursula. There are a lot of people that can see into the future or having fore-warnings in this book and a lot of them come to an end.
