- Where do you see connections between what we've learned about Freud's ideas concerning the unconscious and our dreams and the way Gabriel Garcia Marquez has chosen to write this text? Give specific examples including passages from the text. Cite page numbers.
- Find a piece of art which you feel represents a passage or portion of the text. (You will need to paste the link to the artwork in your blog post so that other students may view it.) Explain your choice. Support your explanation by comparing the passage from the text with details from the artwork. Cite page numbers. Do not simply Google "One Hundred Years of Solitude art", do a little more of an in-depth searching on your own.
- Identify elements of the story that you find particularly interesting, or worthy of discussion. Pose your own questions. Include portions of the text that you feel contribute to your questions/your point. Cite page numbers.
I find it interesting that Jose arcadio buendia is oblivious to his sons. He thinks that jose arcadio is upset because of alchemy. He rarely gives them attention unless it has to do with work or just relates eveything back to alchemy. Do you think he really is just oblivious or is it that he is in denial and pushes everything off to relate to alchemy? some examples of his behavior are on page 32 at the top.
ReplyDeleteI also thought Jose Arcadio Buendia had a weird relationship with his sons. He seemed like he didn't really care about what they were going through and what was going on in their lives that was troubling them he just assumed it had to be about alchemy. I think he is just in denial and just wants to think that they have the same passion for alchemy like he does.

ReplyDeleteThis is a picture of a gypsy fortune teller reading tarot cards. I thought this was significant because a lot of the chapter was devoted to introducing Pilar, the affair between her and Jose Arcadio, and them leaving the town together. She is introduced on page 28 their affair is continued for the next few pages and he leaves on page 34. This lead to his mom leaving for several months to search for him.
I think this is a really good picture to resemble Pilar. Everything about it is really neat. I can picture Pilar looking like that, even in the way she is dressed. I also think the background of the picture is really symbolic too with the smoke, the candles, and the old books. The smoke reminds me of the part in the book where is says she smelled of smoke and the candles and the old books remind me of the time period that this book was taking place. I think the picture is really cool and goes along with the book really well!

ReplyDeleteThis picture symbolizes the beginning of the buendia family in this novel. This shows the beginning of the end in a sense, an example of why this is relevant is when he said this was before anything had names. Much like genesis.
I agree with what you have to say matt, the picture does show the beginning of creation and the start of things. it represents creation, like creation of the buendia family
DeleteBoth Freud and Marquez use the unconscious or dreams in there writings. Freud had some pretty crazy ideas on sexuality but so does Marquez with Jose Arcadio. Jose Arcadio Buendia also sees images of the man he killed and can't get him out of his head. On page 23, he finally has enough and leaves the town to a far away place. Eventually he settles and creates Macando.
ReplyDeleteI agree with bull on seeing the ice of the gypsies, José Arcadio Buendía remembers his dream of Macondo as a city built with mirror-walls, which he thinks it means ice. While Jose Arcadio is still a teenager he is seduced by Pilar, Eventually, he impregnates her. (Page 24,25) Before their child can be born, he meets a young gypsy girl and falls in love with her. When the gypsies leave town, Jose Arcadio joins them. a. Five months later, Úrsula returns, having discovered the easy, two-day adventure through the swamp that connects Macondo with civilization.
DeleteYeah i agree with Bob. There are definitely some similarities between Freud and Marquez. Jose Arcadio Buendia is running away from his past and that is why he left and settled in Macando

ReplyDeleteThis picture reminds me of Jose Arcadio Buendia wandering for years with his friends and family. On page 24 it talks about them being the first people to see the western slopes of the mountain and that they decided to settle down beside the river because they couldn't find the sea.

ReplyDeleteThis picture represents the alchemical symbol for gold. This picture reminds me of when Jose Arcadio Buendía begins to explore alchemy (Page 5,6,7) or the science of making gold out of other metals. In his process of this search for knowledge, he goes into solitude. He ends up withdrawing from human contact only in pursuit of knowledge.
I think you did a fantastic job of useing your extreme creativity to help visulize what you think the alchemical symbol for gold is! You did a great job of then relating it to the book and what we read. Looks like you really understood the text we read and i can see all this information being beneficial in your future endevours!

DeleteGood stuff Mark. I definetly agree with you about it reminding of Jose Arcadio Buendia. He always gets caught up in the newest product right now and it happens to be gold at the moment. He shuts himself off from the rest of the world and it hurts his relationships because of it. Ursula didn't even show much affection when returning to the village.
DeleteMark...no doubt i agree with you on your thoughts of Jose Arcadio Buendia. He takes himself out of human contact and gets caught up in the moment and it hurts him in the end.
Deletei thought the whole relationship between Jose Arcadio and Pilar was interesting and weird. At first he was scared of her and then he wanted to be with her and run away just them. I thought that when Pilar told him he would be a father he would be happy but instead he coudln't even be near her and ended up running away. Did he really even love her or was he just under a spell? Their relationship takes up most of the chapter starting on page 25 and ending on page 32
ReplyDeleteI also thought Jose Arcadio and Pilar had a strange relationship. In some parts of the book he desperately wants to be with her, and in other parts he wants nothing to do with her. I thought he was under a spell when I first read this too but maybe he just doesn't know what he wants and is confused. Sometimes when a man first hears a women tell them they got her pregnant, they want to run away and have nothing to do with the girl anymore. Maybe he isn't ready for such a big committment so he runs away instead of facing it. Maybe he will come back later on in the book.
DeleteI really thought that Jose Arcadio and Pilar were going to be together for the rest of the book, I thought this was just the begining of their relationship. He was so intrigued by her. I get that he was freaked out by the baby considering it was so early in the relationship, but i never wouldve guessed that he would've run off. I wonder how his character will be brought back into the story or maybe we wont see him again.
DeleteI agree with Maria, I thought Jose Arcadio was going to be a main character of the book, not leave so early. I feel like he will come back later on, and teach his family all of the things he's learned while traveling with the gypsies.

ReplyDeleteThis work of art is of a cock fight which reminds me of Jose Aracadio Buendia winning the cock fight from Prudencio Aguilar. On page 21 after Prudencio loses to Jose Arcadio he says, "Congratulations! Maybe that rooster of yours can do you wife a favor." This makes Jose Arcadio furious causing him to then kill Prudencio.

ReplyDeleteThis is a painting of spears. It reminded me of the part in the book where Jose Arcadia Buendia told Prudencio Aguilar that he would be back to fight. Jose came back with his grandfathers spear and used it to kill Aguilar. found on the bottom of page 23 and the beginning of page 24.
I agree with Summer that this painting of spears clearly and accurately symbolizes the killing of Aguilar. Using his grandfathers spear he responds with force to Aguilar's remark at the cock fight.

ReplyDeleteThis picture reminds me of the part at the end of chapter one (pages 17 and 18) when Jose Arcadio Buendia and his two sons went to look at the ice that the giant gypsy had in a pirate chest. When the gypsy first opened the chest, Jose Arcadio Buendia said it was the largest diamond in the world but the gypsy corrected him and said it was ice. Jose Arcadio Buendia was very fascinated with the ice and paid five reales to touch it. He paid ten more reales for his sons to touch it but Jose Arcadio didn't want to. Aureliano did however, and having never touched ice before thought it was boiling. Jose Arcadio Buendia paid five more reales to touch it again and went on to say "this is the great invention of our time." I am curious about this part in the book and why Jose Arcadio Buendia thought it was so amazing. This experience is brought up on page one of the book when Colonel Aureliano Buendia is facing the firing squad, so it must have some significance in the book.
Jose arcadio buendia has a rather interesting relationship with his sons. Its almost as if he has no sympathy for them and think they can handle it all. He goes on about his day as if nothing bugs or effects them. I find it interesting and dont view it as a true father son relationship. I belive he belifs and thoughts toward alchemy does has an effect with this.
ReplyDeleteJose Arcadio Buenia is almost has no sympathy for his sons and doesn't think they can handle anything. he goes about his day as if nothing effects them. i believe that his relationship with his sons is a little corrupt and wrong
ReplyDeleteI think the most confusing thing of this book is that the author uses all the same names. The childrens names are repeated for example Jose Arcadio Buendia and Aureliano. I don't always know who they are referring to. I feel that I wouldn't like to have the same name as my family members.
ReplyDeleteJose Arcadio Buendia i think he doesnt really care about his sons and lets them do what they want and he does his own thing. Jose Arcadio Buendia doesnt have any father qualities.
ReplyDeletei agree with what dakota and camilla said. Jose Arcadio Buendia has a rather unique relationship with his sons, i dont really agree with the way he treats his sons to me its not a real father son relationship. Its really hard for me to understand and keep track with all the same names and whats going on. The author could've came up with different names.
ReplyDeleteI think the most confusing thing is all the same names. Its hard for me to keep track of who is who and etc. I think this book would of benefited more if the author would have came up with different and uniquer names.
